As we mentioned in a previous post , bandanas are making a big come-back as a hot fashion accessory.
After enjoying huge popularity during the ‘90s and then dying off in the early 2000s, bandanas are back, thanks in large part to young TikTok influencers.
But what many are not aware of is that bandanas are and have been for years, a hot, popular pet accessory, especially for dogs. This trend doesn’t display any signs of weakening any time soon – and for several good reasons.
Read on, then, to find out what you need to know about dog bandanas.
Proof That Dog Bandanas Are Big
If you don’t believe pet bandanas are a hot pet-fashion accessory, then consider this . . .
In 2015, Canberra, Australia, hosted the largest ever gathering of dogs wearing bandanas. At this event organized by the RSPCS ACT (Australia), 764 bandana-clad dogs assembled in one venue.
Besides being a fun-filled fashion show for the dogs and their owners, the event raised AU $31,000 to support the RSPCA.
And what would you have seen at this impressive gathering?
• Dogs and their humans wearing matching bandanas for easy identification
• Bandanas used as marketing tools to promote adoption services and business brands
• Unique bandanas used by owners to make their dogs stand out
• Bandanas used to make a memorable pet fashion statement
• And so much more.
And in the US alone, people spend over $75 billion annually on their pets. More than $15 billion of that goes for pet fashion accessories, which, of course, includes bandanas.
Reasons Your Pup Should Wear a Dog Bandana
Here are just a few of the reasons your dog should be wearing a bandana . . .
Protection From the Elements
One thing both furry family members and their humans really enjoy is hiking together.
But you may have to contend with extreme weather conditions – blistering summer heat, frigid winter cold, or rain/snow/sleet. Bandanas provide the perfect pet protection from extreme weather on hikes.
A dog bandana can do double duty to keep your pup comfortable. It can help keep your pup warm in winter, and when moistened can help keep your buddy cool during hot months.
Ear Protection
If your fur buddy happens to be recovering from an ear injury or surgery, a bandana can serve well to keep those delicate ears protected against dirt, sunburn, and scratching.
Night Safety
Many people like to take their pets on night-time walks around the neighborhood, and on such walks visibility and safety become extremely important.
A reflective or brightly bandana can make your pup more visible to drivers, especially when combined with a reflective leash and collar.
Flea and Tick Control
A pet bandana can also serve as an extra flea and tick collar for even more protection. Just dampen the bandana with a safe pest repellent and then fasten it around your pup’s neck. This is something you should consider when hiking in deep woods.
How to Put a Pet Bandana on Your Pup
And here’s how to put that square piece of fabric on your pup. Just always keep comfort in mind above all, even if the bandana will be worn only for a short time.
Here’s what to do . . .
1. Fold the bandana in half, one corner meeting the diagonally opposite corner, to form a triangle.
2. Place it around your pup’s neck with the point of the triangle on top and pointing toward the tail.
3. Tie the two ends of the triangle’s base under the neck. Make sure the knot is tight enough to stay tied, but not so tight that you can’t untie it later.
4. When tying the bandana ends, make sure that it’s not too tight around the neck. You should be able to easily slip two fingers under the bandana.
Dog Bandana Selection Tips
Now, when you’re ready to get down to your pet bandana shopping, here are a few things to keep in mind . . . .
• Bandana size – Dog bandanas are not one-size-fits-all, so be sure to measure the circumference of your pup’s neck and then look for appropriately sized bandanas.
• Fabric – Most bandanas are cotton, but there are other options. Make sure the fabric is both durable and breathable.
• Ease of Cleaning – Dog bandanas are going to get dirty, picking up dirt and oils from your pets skin. A bandana choice, then, will be easy to clean and stand up to multiple washings.
• Customizable – You’ll also probably want to personalize or spiffy up your pup’s apparel. So look for a bandana source that offers custom embroidery and/or custom printing.
